Scenic 395 - The Official Guide 2018/2019
2018-2019 Scenic 395 9 Tehachapi, Cal City, Jawbone ! " ! " # $ % & ! ' " By Kane Wickham L ocated three miles outside of California City lies a gem in the desert where hun- dreds of riders gather to test their skills and have fun on the track — the one and only Cal City Motocross Park. The brain- child of owners John and Inge Elmes, Cal City MX Park opened its gates April 1, 2006. CCMX was the childhood dream of John’s, who always wanted to own a motocross track. Add in wife and co-owner Inge and their four sons, and you have a family operation along with that dream. The track is a National Out- door Style track with variations in terrain and obstacles that change seasonally. CCMX runs six of their own race events an- nually, and another four to six races with outside promoters. The track accepts 28 different bike classes ranging from 50cc to 450cc bikes and the age range of the riders at CCMX run from 4 years old to 60-plus. CCMX hosts Beginner, Novice, Interme- diate, and Pro classes as well as Veteran class races. The annual season runs from September to July, and during the down season owner John works his magic creating a new course for the next season. CCMX recently hosted its third annual Central Valley Series, which runs between July and September and includes a stop at CCMX, followed by stops at Porterville MX Park, Kern Coun- ty Race Park in Bakersfield, and DT1 MX Park in Tulare before returning to CCMX September 9 for the final races, trophy cere- mony and barbecue. Inge spoke to the future of CCMX stating they have big plans for the track which they hope to get started on as soon as next summer. In the meantime CCMX is hosting their first ever National Race when the OTHG racers (Over The Hill Gang) de- scend on CCMX to have it out in the dirt this October. Though the track is currently closed for racing until the season opener September 1, they are open every weekend for practice on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. unless there is a race on Sunday. The track brings in hundreds of riders annually, and camping is always free. Spectators are also free on all practice days. For more info visit http://www.calcitymx.com. Cal City MX Park offers an oasis of motocross fun in the desert PHOTO BY KANE WICKHAM Riders enjoying some air time at Cal City MX Park in early July 2018. By Joyce Grant G len Bolding and Jayme Rawls are convinced that diners at Foxy’s Landing Restaurant have the best, most interesting views in the city — all while enjoying great homestyle- cooked food. The dining room vista includes the Tehachapi Mountains as a scenic backdrop for the action on the runway at the California City Airport. The restaurant itself celebrates the excitement of aviation and features model airplanes sus- pended from the ceiling in the dining area. Glen, a hobbyist for many years and member of the California City RC (radio-con- trolled) Aircraft Club, shares with customers his collection of home-built World War II model aircraft that include biplanes, a P-51 Trainer, and eye-catching Red Baron Triplane. In addition, a large colorful oil painting on the wall illustrates past hot-air balloon events held at the airport, as well as another which depicts the original airport terminal. The friendly little fox logo also suggests the relaxed, sociable at- mosphere Glen and his partner, Jayme, have created since he took ownership in 2007. Glen, who does most of the cooking, and Jayme, who does the serving, offer a popular menu of daily specials and all-you-can- eat weekend specials of catfish and baby back ribs that have earned them a bevy of loyal cus- tomers. Glen is a food “craftsman” who considers breakfast to be an art- ful endeavor. Omelettes are his specialty. “They require the right flame height and proper whip- ping of the eggs,” he explained, “plus, I also put in a lot of car- ing.” The Catalina, which fea- tures sausage, bacon, onions, av- ocado, and cheese, is his personal favorite. “We serve really good food. Most of our food items are pre- pared fresh daily. We offer sizable portions, and we’re still operating on prices from 2003,” said Glen, who added that his customers have become "like family." Indeed, postcards, including those from celebrities, se nt from all over the country, cover the wall behind the cash register.
