2018-2019 Scenic 395 10 California City and Jawbone By Abbey Hood S ince 1998, Friends of Jawbone has worked closely with the Bureau of Land Man- agement in managing the Jawbone Canyon and Dove Springs off-road ar- eas. The Friends of Jaw- bone staffs the beautiful, state-of-the-art Jawbone Station Visitors center seven days a week, 365 days a year. Our knowl- edgeable staff fields ques- tions on everything from traveling the area, to where to camp, to where and how to get supplies. The Jawbone Station Vis- itors Center houses inter- pretive displays about the native flora and fauna of the Mojave Desert, the history of the area, and general information about the Mojave Desert. The attached bookstore carries an inventory of specially selected books that includes hard-to- find trail books, maps, Western history books, and a children’s book sec- tion. Jawbone Canyon and Dove Springs are the places for family friendly and safe Off- Highway Vehicle recre- ation in the Mojave Desert thanks to Friends of Jawbone, the BLM, other local agencies, and many more groups and individuals. The fre- quently updated Friends of Jawbone trail map helps guide visitors safely through even the most remote areas around Jawbone Canyon. Jaw- bone Canyon and Dove Springs Open Areas offer plenty of open camping and riding opportunities to popular local destina- tions like Randsburg, Bickle Camp, and the world-famous Burro Schmidt tunnel. With so much to offer, it’s no wonder that families flock to Jawbone Canyon each year to escape the pressures of city life and spend a few days cruising remote desert roads on their off-highway vehicle! If you are looking for a new place to recreate you need look no further. With single track trails, ATV trails, challenging four-wheel-drive trails, and plenty of hiking and equestrian opportunities, the greater Jawbone Canyon area offers some- thing for everyone. The Jawbone Station Visitors center, and Jawbone Canyon Open Area, are located just south of Red Rock Canyon State Park, off Highway 14.
