Baker The Daily Independent For those who venture north on Highway 395, Lone Pine, Bishop and Mammoth are three more designations to keep an eye on for family fun. Lone Pine First, the town of Lone Pine is said to be the gateway to Mt. Whitney and Death Valley. One thing that makes Lone Pine a great place to visit is that it is home to both the highest and low- est elevations in the lower 48 states, and both within one hour drive of each other. The Lone Pine Chamber Office is located at 120 S. Main Street, in the historical building of the Lone Pine Hotel. Events held in Lone Pine are the Inyo County Amateur Photo Contest to be held later in the year and the WildWest Marathon to be held May 6, 2023. For more information on Lone Pine events, call the Lone Pine Chamber of Commerce at 760-876-4444. Bishop Next, Bishop is another must-see designation with a number of annual events featured. Known as “The Small Town with a Big Backyard,” Bishop is home to a number of annual events. Coming up in 2023 is the Bob Bishop Trout Rodeo to be held Feb. 18 and 19. This is a catch and release event brought to you by the South- west Council Fly Fishers International. This will be a trout tour- nament for both fly fishers and conventional fishers. Pleasant Valley Reservoir and the Owens River will be the focus of the fishing. On March 11, the Blake Jones Trout Derby will be held at the Tri-County Fairgrounds & Event Center, Heritage Arts Build- ing. Over $10K in cash & prizes will be awarded. It is one of Cali- fornia’s largest single-day trout derbies. Registration, check-in and prize ceremony will be held at Tri-County Fairgrounds. Fishing at Pleasant Valley Reservoir and Owens River. Blind Bogey format with prizes for all ages. Other Bishop events: * The California High School Rodeo held in June; * The Christmas Parade held the first Saturday of each De- cember beginning at 4 p.m.; * The Laws Railroad Express held the second Saturday of each December; and * The High Country Lumber Holiday Mixer held the third Sat- urday of each December. For more information on all events to be held in the Bishop area, contact the Bishop Visitor Center, located at 690 N. Main Continued on Page 37 The Fourth of July parade in Mammoth. Courtesy photo
