The well-kept grounds are full of big trees and shade, accented by the sound of Bishop Creek that meanders through it. The local Bishop Community Big Band plays at the gazebo in the front of the park Monday evenings in the summer. There are ducks to feed and benches made for picnics, and that’s just in the front. In the back is a large pond and gazebo, a skate park, and a place for big parties and receptions. The Park’s back yard was recently made bigger by a long-term lease for Bishop. The lease, which the city has worked on for more than 20 years, has opened the doors for Bishop to develop a Master Plan that includes everything from a Dog Park to community gardens, and dreams of a community and performing arts center. There’s something for everyone’s taste at the park; a skateboard park, a public pool open in the summer, tennis courts and volleyball nets, two, yes, two playgrounds. And a new outdoor fitness center lo- cated in the east end of the park, a joint effort with the Toiyabe Indian Health Project made to keep kids of all ages, 9 to 90, healthy and ac- tive. The new fitness center is next to the Bishop Senior Center. Some of the other year-round activities offered by the park include; Trunk or Treat, Farmer’s Market, Softball and Tennis tournaments, the Fourth of July Celebration Big Day in the Park, Eggstravaganza, Skate and Bike Jam, Lighting of the New Children’s Christmas Tree, Arbor Day, a Triathlon, Bishop Invitational, and the Twilight Swim Meet. At the entrance to the Bishop City Park off Highway 395 is the Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Center. The Chamber is a one- stop information hub for all things Bishop — from where to stay, to where to eat, to what to see. The Chamber also sponsors a lake full of fishing and holiday events in the park. From the annual Christ- mas Tree lighting and the Mule Days Arts and Crafts festival to the resurgence of Rainbow Trout Days where anglers vie for top fish on Opening Day. The days have been brought back after a hiatus, with the modern days bringing in fishing experts from guide service and governmental agencies to teach kids how to fish and respect the land.
